Claire McMahon is a Kwikly dental hygienist in Dallas Texas. We had the pleasure to talk with her about her career, life, and goals.

How long have you been a hygienist and what drew you to the profession?

I have been a hygienist for two years. I was drawn to this career because there are so many options for hours, office styles, and job opportunities. I also love patient interaction and providing care.

Do you have any hobbies, pets, family, or passions that you are pursuing?

We have two dogs who we love to take camping and hiking!

Do you have a particular approach or philosophy for providing patient care?

I think that one of the most important parts of patient care is education. If someone comes in with the same issues, it’s almost always a quick fix! A simple change in diet or technique can make a huge difference. I try to not only fix the problem but the cause of the problem too.

What was it like working your first temp shift?

I was nervous working my first temp shift, but most often offices are very helpful, and just thankful you’re there.

In your video, you mentioned making connections with other dental professionals. How has that impacted your career?

I enjoy making connections with other dental professionals when I temp because you never know who/when it will benefit you to have a relationship! I hope to branch beyond clinical work in the future, so want to know the right people who can help me do so. So far, I have met great mentors and found great shift opportunities.

What is something you wished young hygienists understood about hygiene or dentistry?

You know more than you give yourself credit for when you graduate! Go in with confidence.

What are you most looking forward to, personally or professionally?

I look forward to having a family (beyond just my four-legged kids) in the future. That’s one of the things I love about being a dental hygienist and temping specifically. There’s so much flexibility that gives me the opportunity to build the schedule that will work best for that.
